18 Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions

Yuta Togashi spent his middle school years believing himself to be a superpowered being called the “Dark Flame Master,” something he now finds quite embarrassing. He wants to start over in high school as a normal student, but Rikka Takanashi, who believes herself to have similar powers, takes an interest in Yuta.

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions is a hilarious anime chock-full of bizarre characters. The relationship between Yuta and Rikka is dynamic and hilarious, and the quirky cast of characters that build up throughout the anime is a treat to watch.

17 Aharen-san Is Indecipherable

Hoping to make friends on his first day of school, Raido reaches out to the student sitting next to him, Reina Aharen. However, he finds it hard to communicate with her or even understand her actions, as she speaks so quietly that it is almost impossible to hear her.

Aharen-san Is Indecipherable is a new anime series that debuted in Spring 2022, but it has already proven to be quite popular. The antics between Raido and Aharen are quite hilarious, and their unique characteristics keeps things from getting stale.

16 Fruits Basket (2019)

When Tohru Honda’s mother dies in an accident, she is sent to live with her grandfather, but finding the place uncomfortable, she decides to move out. By chance, she is given the opportunity to live with the Sohmas, and learns a strange family secret.

Fruits Basket was a classic shojo anime series from the early 2000s, but it was rebooted in 2019, allowing for a more complete adaptation of the manga. The growing relationships between Tohru and the various members of the Sohma family are heartwarming to watch.

15 March Comes In Like A Lion

Seventeen-year-old Rei Kiriyama is a shogi prodigy with few connections to others. A lonely young man who lost his family in an accident, Rei finds himself reluctantly connected to the Kawamato sisters, who slowly pull him out of his shell.

March Comes In Like A Lion might not be as silly as Komi Can’t Communicate is, but there is a soothing aspect to the show, and watching Rei warm up to the people around him is quite touching. It does have some drama here and there, but it is only to balance out the lighthearted parts.

14 Natsume’s Book Of Friends

Takashi Natsume has always been able to see spirits, an ability that has made it hard for him to connect with other people. One day, he finds the Book of Friends, an item owned by his grandmother, who used the book to make spirits her servants. Natsume takes the book and decides to dissolve the book’s contracts, despite the danger to his life.

Natsume’s Book Of Friends is a more supernatural take on the usual slice-of-life story. While there are some seemingly intense scenes, the stories overall are actually quite heartwarming.

13 My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected

Hachiman Hikigaya has a twisted view of the world, seeing youth as nothing more than a lie created by hypocrites. His teacher decides to send him to the Service Club, where he helps to solve other students’ problems with Yukino Yukinoshita, another student with socialization issues.

My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected derives its fun through the dynamic between the two main characters, as well as the various classmates that they interact with. While the show isn’t exactly touching, it does have its heartwarming moments.

12 Barakamon

After Seishu Handa loses his temper and punches a man at a calligraphy exhibition, he is shipped out to a remote island to reflect on his actions. There, he comes into contact with the locals, including an energetic young girl named Naru.

Barakamon is a bundle of laughs, and the dynamic between the antisocial Handa and the obnoxious Naru is always fun to watch. Seeing Handa grow as a person thanks to the influence of the locals and how it improves his calligraphy is also fun to watch.

11 Azumanga Daioh

One of the funniest anime series of the 2000s, Azumanga Daioh chronicles the adventures of six high school girls, each of them with their own quirky, yet distinctive personality. There’s no real overarching plot, and every episode prefers to focus on silly conversations and hijinks that the girls get up to.

Even so, Azumanga Daioh still has a lot of bright spots. The show is quirky and funny, and the characters are a delight to watch. While there aren’t many heartwarming moments like in Komi Can’t Communicate, this show is still a bundle of laughs.

10 Senryu Girl

Nanako Yukishiro seems like a normal girl, except for one thing: she can only communicate in senryu, poems formed in a 5-7-5 syllabic pattern (which Westerners may know as a haiku). She strikes up an unlikely friendship with Eiji Busujima, with whom she attends her school’s Literature Club.

This anime is fairly short at only twelve minutes per episode, but it provides a nice, low-intensity experience for people hoping for a drama-free anime. With its lighthearted story beats and adorable characters, Senryu Girl is the perfect anime to watch while winding down from a tough day.

9 Horimiya

Kyoko Hori looks like a cheerful, stylish young girl, while Izumi Miyamura seems like a quiet loner. However, their real personas, which they try to hide from their classmates at school, couldn’t be more different. One day, they happen to stumble upon each other’s secrets, and a relationship blooms between them.

Compared to the other entries on this list, Horimiya leans more on the romantic side rather than the comedic side. Despite this, it’s still quite entertaining to see this duo balance their outward personalities with their inner selves, and the series is very popular.

8 Seitokai Yakuindomo

On his first day at Osai Academy, a former all-girls school, Takatoshi Tsuda is immediately recruited into its Student Council as its first male vice president. As he gets used to his new role, he also becomes familiar with the other council members, who all have their unique quirks and eccentricities.

Seitokai Yakuindomo is definitely heavier on the comedy than it is on the romance, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its romantic moments. It’s also much raunchier than the other series on this list, but only in a verbal way.

7 Teasing Master Takagi-san

Nishikata has a problem, and her name is Takagi. No matter what he does, he can’t seem to get an edge over her, and he always falls for her pranks and jokes. Unbeknowst to him, of course, is the fact that Takagi has a crush on him, which everyone else seems to know.

Karakai Jozu No Takagi-san is a lighthearted series that focuses more on comedic moments than romantic ones, but the undertones are present. It’s an adorable series perfect for viewers who just want a light, drama-free experience.

6 Working!!

Sota Takanashi is a high school student who starts working at the family restaurant Wagnaria, where he is beset from all sides by his bizarre co-workers. As he attempts to get used to his new job, he finds himself forced to deal with his co-workers’ quirks and eccentricities.

Working!! might seem like a simple gag anime at the beginning, but a low undercurrent of romance begins to boil between this vibrant ensemble cast as the series goes on. It is somewhat older than the other shows but guaranteed to offer a good time.

5 My Senpai Is Annoying

Futaba Igarashi is an up-and-coming saleswoman who can’t help but find herself exasperated by her boisterous, overbearing senior Harumi Takeda, especially since he constantly seems to treat her like a child. Despite this, it is clear that Futaba is also starting to fall in love with Takeda.

RELATED: Comedy Anime That Are Underrated

My Senpai Is Annoying is a fun, light-hearted romp that showcases the best sides of the romantic comedy genre. Additionally, the show is airing around the same time as Komi Can’t Communicate, so fans can keep up with both shows simultaneously.

4 Silver Spoon

After a bit of trouble at home, Yugo Hachiken travels to the countryside and enrolls in Ezo Agricultural High School on a whim. Despite this, he finds himself drawn into the school’s atmosphere, especially when he ends up crushing on his classmate Aki Mikage.

Silver Spoon is a much more serious series than the others on this list, with romantic moments being quite sparse. However, it provides a laid-back look at agricultural life in Japan, with just as many hijinks as a regular comedy anime. The agricultural school setting is also a unique angle, not shared by other anime based in schools.

3 Toradora!

Ryuji Takasu is a gentle soul who is mistaken for a delinquent, while Taiga Aisaka is an awkward girl who masks her shyness with fierce aggression. The two of them become friends, and when they discover that both of them are in love with the other’s best friend, decide to help each other achieve their love.

Toradora! is a somewhat older series compared to most other shows on this list, but it is a classic that deserves to be remembered. A balanced mix of romance and comedy makes this series one of the best anime of the 21st century.

2 Actually, I Am

Asahi Kuromine can’t keep a secret. So what will he do when he discovers that his classmate and crush, Youko Shiragami, is a vampire?

Entrusted with Youko’s secret, Asahi must do his very best to keep others from learning of it themselves while also trying to muster the courage to confess his own secret: that he’s fallen in love with her. Actually, I Am is a comical masterpiece that will make viewers cry with laughter as much as it will leave them with heartwarming smiles.

1 Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

What happens when two extremely brilliant students of an elite academy are too proud to fall in love? They engage in a battle of fierce wits, meant to make the other confess their love first.

Shenanigans and hijinks ensue between these two geniuses too smart for their own good. Those escapades are hilarious enough to make this show worth watching, but it’s when the facade gives way to emotional, heartwarming moments that this show really shines. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is one of the most unique romantic comedies to come out in recent years, and a blast to experience.
